In 1989, the Rx Pets Program was co-founded by Shannon Schaefer.  Rx Pets is a volunteer pet therapy program in the Palomar Pomerado Health System in San Diego County, California.  This program is one of the largest and most successful pet therapy programs in the nation. Dog visits are ordered by a physician when in the best interest of the patient. Since its inception, it has enlarged to include two acute-care hospitals and two extended-care facilities.

Rx Pets remains a project of high priority to Ms. Schaefer who screens the prospective volunteer dogs and provides additional training help at no charge to the volunteer owners. The Rx Pets Program attracts numerous public speaking engagements for Ms. Schaefer at continuing education seminars for the health care industry and service clubs.
